Morocco’s national climate change objectives include making the territory and population more resilient while ensuring a rapid transition to a low-carbon economy. In this perspective, the new Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) defines a percentage of 11.7% in terms of mitigation efforts expected from the agriculture sector by 2030.It is within this framework that the Frezna project, launched in 2017 by GIZ in collaboration with the Danone Ecosystem Fund, Dirafrost and Messem, aims to promote the sustainable production of local strawberries in the Loukkos region. One of the main objectives of the project is to reduce the carbon footprint of the strawberry production activity through appropriate improvement measures. ACS, mandated by GIZ for this purpose, has developed a greenhouse gas accounting tool adapted to the agricultural context and specifically to the strawberry production activity. This tool was designed to facilitate the calculation of GHG emissions from strawberry farms in the Loukos region, which will allow them to monitor their carbon footprint regularly, and thus anticipate future regulations linked to the European Union’s Green Deal carbon tax on export products, particularly strawberries.
